ECOWater
Reducing the Single Use Plastic Bottles in Cyprus Our project aims to combat plastic pollution both locally in Cyprus and on a broader scale by extending its reach to other tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and beyond. To accomplish this, we have set several objectives. We assess the current status quo of plastic flow, specifically focusing on single-use plastic bottles in Cyprus and implement an innovative and alternative approach that promotes the reuse of these bottles, thereby reducing their overall consumption. By doing so, we minimize the pollution caused by single-use plastic bottles at its source and mitigate its adverse effects on the marine environment. Additionally, a pilot program within the tourism sector, which will serve as a foundation for expanding and adopting this approach among various stakeholders, with the assistance of local authorities has been initiated. The project seeks to establish sustainable long-term solutions as part of an overarching strategy to address plastic pollution. ECOWater aims to enhance our understanding of the local context pertaining to plastic pollution, including identifying major sources, assessing the population's level of awareness, evaluating the waste treatment system, examining existing regulations, identifying key obstacles to implementing solutions, and identifying relevant stakeholders. The overall goal is to reinforce and replicate effective actions that are already being carried out in the Mediterranean region, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Within the framework of this initiative, the online EcoWater map was created. Use this map to locate water fountains and refill your reusable bottle. |
