Space4Green Pilot Testing for Commandaria Wine Traceability: A New Era for a Centuries-Old Tradition
Commandaria, a world-renowned sweet dessert wine from Cyprus, is one of the oldest named wines still in production today. With a history dating back to the Crusades, this iconic wine is crafted from sun-dried grapes of indigenous varieties, preserving a centuries-old tradition. Yet, in today's world of increasing transparency and sustainability demands, ensuring the traceability of every step in its production has become essential.

From September 4th to 7th, we embarked on an exciting new journey, successfully conducting a pilot test of the Space4Green Application, a groundbreaking tool designed to enhance the traceability of the Koumandaria winemaking process. The test, carried out in collaboration with Zambartas Winery, aimed to capture vital data at every stage of production, including:
- Collection of the vines: We tracked the precise moment the grapes were harvested from the vineyard.
- Transport route: The app monitored the journey from the vineyard to the winery, ensuring transparency and accountability.
- Verification at the winery: Workers and managers confirmed the acceptance of the specific grape varieties, i.e. Maratheftiko, Xynisteri, the farmer's identity, and the weight of the cultivated grapes upon delivery.
This level of traceability is essential for maintaining the integrity and quality of Commandaria, ensuring that both producers and consumers can trust the origins and handling of the wine. For farmers and wineries, this system promotes accountability, prevents potential fraud, and guarantees that each batch of grapes meets the high standards required for producing Commandaria. For consumers, it offers an unprecedented level of trust, allowing them to trace their wine back to its origins.
The Space4Green application leverages cutting-edge technologies, including satellite data and blockchain, to ensure transparency at every level of the supply chain. By embracing this technology, we not only preserve the rich history of Koumandaria but also ensure its future in a world that demands sustainable, accountable, and traceable products.

The technology used in the Space4Green application is important for Commandaria winemaking, and other similar products' making for several reasons. including:
- Preservation of Authenticity
- Enhanced Traceability
- Quality Control
- Sustainability and Efficiency
- Consumer Trust
